The incidence of Oral Cancer is rising here in the United States and Internationally as well. In the US this year over 42,000 Americans will be diagnosed with Oral Cancer and sadly, over 9,000 of those diagnosed will die. The good news is that Oral Cancer has a very high treatment success rate when detected early.
Another dimension of Oral Cancer is that the risk profile is changing. Traditional risk groups included smokers, chewing tobacco users and moderate to heavy alcohol consumption. However, in the past 5 years more than 50% of all diagnosed cases of Oral Cancer been patients who never smoked, used chewing tobacco or had moderate to heavy alcohol use. One possible reason is the link between Oral Cancer and HPV.
