Top 5 Ways to LOVE Dentistry

Top 5 Ways to LOVE Dentistry

On this Valentine’s Day, with thoughts of Love in the air, I have a simple question for you to think about. Do you LOVE dentistry?

It has been my life’s work to study successful dental practices and I have noticed that a common denominator of many successful Dentists is that they absolutely love dentistry. Oh, don’t get me wrong. You can be successful without loving what you do, but it is a hollow victory. The real winners are those individuals that truly love what they do. Seems to me that more Dentists could benefit from finding passion in their life’s work.

If you are at a point in your dental career where you could use a bit of a spark to find passion in what you do here is a list of the top 5 ways to love dentistry:

Volunteer on an International Trip
One of the best ways to feel great about the dental profession is to go on a volunteer trip to help those people less fortunate. I’m never sure who benefits more, those that receive the care or those that provide it! There are many wonderful organizations where you can volunteer your time and skills. The Open Wide Foundation in Guatemala is one such group. Here’s more info http://openwidefoundation.org/

Join the Heart Your Smile Movement
This is a fabulous project that celebrates the 9 Habits of a Happy Dental Professional! This is a wonderful resource for the Dentist and the entire team. Check them out: http://www.heartyoursmile.co.uk/dental-home/

Make a List of 5 Patients Whose Lives You’ve Changed
Sit down with your team and make a list of 5 patients whose lives you have changed through your care. It could be something big like providing them with the smile of their dreams or it could be something equally important like helping a patient overcome their fear or stating a child out with a great 1st dental experience. Celebrate these triumphs!

Embrace CE
There is no coincidence that Dentists who love their career are constantly learning and growing their skills. Create a three-year plan for the courses you want to take with the leaders who you want to influence your career.

Surround Yourself with Positive, Supportive People
It is so important to surround yourself with positive, supportive people who believe in you. Avoid the toxic people.

If you do not absolutely love dentistry………..and I mean absolutely love dentistry……… ask yourself what would need to change for that to be true? Think about it. White down exactly what would need to change. Then answer this question…….When will you make those changes? You deserve to absolutely LOVE what you do! Keep Smiling!
